Pre-Season Training Weekend

Pre-Season Training Weekend

Taking place over a weekend normally at the beginning of April, there will be opportunity to try the full distances (3.8kS, 180kB, 42kR), half distances (1.9kS, 90kB, 21kR) or Olympic distances (1.5kS, 40kB, 10kR) in each discipline. You may also mix distances (e.g. full distance swim and cycle with half distance run) or miss disciplines out (e.g. half distance swim with Olympic distance run).

Entry will be in advance via Eventbrite when you will be able to indicate what distances/disciplines you want to do and give your estimated swim time. If you need any more information please  contact the organiser direct.

From 2015 a token fee will be required from anyone wishing to take part in the weekend. £6 (in tokens) per discipline or £12 (in tokens) for all three days.

Swim

Location: Farnham Leisure Centre, Dogflud Way, Farnham.

Date: Friday

Time: Provisionally 2 lanes from 8.30pm, full pool from 9:00pm - 10:00pm

Distance: 3.8km, 1.9km or 1.5km

All BTF competition and technical rules apply.

There will be 3 waves & slower full distance swimmers will start at 8.30pm with a maximum swim time available of 1hr 30mins. You will be notified of your swim start time a day or two beforehand. Please arrive early. Allow time to register & pay tokens and be on poolside for a prompt start.

Full distance swimmers will complete 152 lengths of the Farnham 25m pool. Half distance swimmers will complete 76 lengths of the 25m pool. Olympic distance swimmers will complete 60 lengths of the 25m pool. There will be a timekeeper/lap counter for each lane and you will be briefed before the start.

Please bring your own food and drink. As usual, no food on poolside but drinks bottles are OK.

Cycle (2012 onwards)

Location:  Preston Candover Village Hall.

Date: Saturday

Time: 08.30am - 09.30am rolling start - full distance cyclists first

Distance: 180km, 90km or 30km (the possibility of timing an exact 40km is being investigated prior to the 2019 weekend)

All BTF competition and technical rules apply on the bike course, in particular use of an approved cycle helmet (Please note No helmet = no cycle!).

You will need to have a working (and lit) rear light.

Come dressed appropriately for the prevailing weather conditions. Be prepared to leave some warm clothing at the start/finish in case conditions change.

Car parking is currently restricted to the layby next door and local roads.

You will need to have a working (and lit) rear light.  Some of the roads on the bike route are narrow & the conditions in some places are poor - expect the unexpected (eg tractors) and come prepared with winter tyres and spare inner tubes/puncture repair kit.

A food/aid station will be set up at the start/finish. Hence, there will be opportunity to take on food and drink every 30km. We can supply water but cyclists will need to bring their own food and/or energy drinks, packaged and labelled accordingly, so that they can be handed out at the food/aid station.

Course Map:3 x 30km laps for the half distance, 6 x 30km laps for the full distance.

Some Safety Notes on the Ironman Weekend Bike Course from Mark Richardson

There will be a few flints around (I punctured my Schwalbe Stelvio pluses for the first time in 2 years on the route – flint like a medieval axe-head) – not a route for your lightest tyres if it’s recently rained! Or at least make sure you have puncture repair kit with you.

A few of the corners are tight – the left turn after Swarraton – the right to climb up to Bentworth and the left as you enter Bentworth spring to mind – take care on these corners

Some of the lanes are “tight” approaching Bentworth and leaving Bentworth folks will HAVE TO SLOW DOWN so as not to spook any oncoming cars – likewise the cars should (theoretically at least) do the same.

There’s mud on the road in places due to farm traffic – expect it! and be extra careful in the wet.

There will be large numbers going round the course - the onus is on you to keep car drivers happy with our behaviour on the road.

Run

Location: Public Car Park opposite The Wharf boat hire by the Waterwitch pub, Colt Hill, Odiham RG29 1AL.

Date: Sunday

Time: 10:00am

Distance: 42km, 21km or 10km

All BTF competition and technical rules apply.

Run start 10am from the canalside picnic area opposite The Wharf boat hire by the Waterwitch pub, Colt Hill, Odiham RG29 1AL - access from Odiham along Colt Hill (the old London Rd) past the pub and over the bridge into the car park on the right.

Please arrive in plenty of time to give any gels/drinks to the turnaround marshalls and for a group photo before the start.

Choice of distance:  full or half marathon, with loops down to a well marked point past the Barley Mow canal car park at Winchfield and a 500m loop towards Greywell to make up the distances.

The run will be a mass start. Please be aware that the canal is in use by members of the public. Slow down and take care when passing both the public and other runners – the path is narrow in places where the bank has eroded unevenly. In the past we have encountered a small group of deaf people so remember, the walker you are trying to pass may not be able to hear you! Remember this is a canal towpath – the surface is uneven, with exposed roots in many places, with muddy sections and with plenty of pot holes and changes in surface level. Take care – and avoid falling in!

Water will be provided at the start/finish and at the Barley Mow, hence there will be approximately 5km (3 miles) between water stops. Athletes will need to bring their own food and energy drinks/gels packaged and labelled accordingly if they want these handed out at the start/finish area. There will be an opportunity before the start to send your gels etc with the Barley Mow marshalls.

Finally – there will be home-made cake at the finish to celebrate your achievement.

Volunteers

We can’t make this training weekend happen without plenty of volunteers and we will be looking for 12 timekeepers/lap counters for the swim, 6 or more marshals for the bike and 4 for the run turnaround points. If you are free yourself or can persuade someone else, please register on eventbrite or let the race organiser know. Volunteers will be rewarded with cake!!!
